Cisco 7500 Series Routers

The Cisco 7500 Series Router uses Versatile Interface Processors (VIPs) to provide a distributed, scaleable architecture. Each VIP has its own processor that is capable of switching IP data packets and providing network services. This architecture allows the overall system performance of Cisco 7500 routers to scale up when they need to handle more high-speed network connections and more data packets. The RSP is still the master of the system, running routing protocols with other routers in the network to gather switching intelligence, which is then downloaded to the VIPs so that each can switch IP packets on its own.

In addition to performing packet switching, the VIPs also provide a set of distributed IP network services, including access control, QoS, and traffic accounting (NetFlow). With the VIPs off-loading IP switching and service functions from the RSP, the RSP can devote all its processor cycles to handle other essential tasks. VIP distributed switching is the way to scale up system performance, and should be enabled where possible, to significantly reduce CPU utilization on the RSP.

With Cisco UOM there are no rules to write, no thresholds to define, and no extensive and time-consuming initial setup.

Key features include:

  • Real-time visualization and monitoring of the entire Unified Communications system enables highly effective monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Active service assurance ensures that devices and applications are functioning as they should and reveals faults and performance issues before they affect service.
  • Powerful diagnostic tests and troubleshooting capabilities rapidly isolate faults and increase productivity.
  • Correlation, analysis, and presentation of voice service quality data and alerts make use of information available through Cisco Unified Service Monitor (when it is deployed).
  • Inventory and change monitoring enable tracking of complete details of unified communications devices and IP phone inventory.

Cisco Unified Service Monitor

Cisco Unified Service Monitor (Cisco USM) lets you make sure your communications are clear and performing well for your users. Cisco USM continuously monitors active calls supported by the Cisco Unified Communications system and provides near-real-time notification when the quality of a call fails to meet a user-defined threshold.

Cisco USM 2.0 includes the following two components:

  1. Sensor hardware, deployed at the endpoint (IP phone, gateway or voicemail system), monitors and evaluates call quality and reports this information for active calls in near real-time.
  2. Central service monitor software operates on a Windows 2003 server platform and receives voice quality information from Cisco Sensors and Cisco Unified CallManager systems.

Users can configure quality thresholds (expressed as a Mean Opinion Score [MOS]) on a per codec basis. Alerts are sent to an upstream application such as Cisco Unified Operations Manager when an MOS threshold is violated. This allows users to understand service quality at a system level through Cisco Voice Transmission Quality (VTQ) support and real-time service quality through Cisco 1040 Sensors.

Cisco Unified Provisioning Manager

Cisco Unified Provisioning Manager helps you reduce the initial and ongoing costs of Cisco Unified Communications solutions. Cisco Unified Provisioning Manager supports initial deployments and implementations, handles ongoing operational provisioning and activation services for individual subscriber changes, and provides a single, consolidated view of subscribers across the organization. It lets you set of policy-driven, business-level management abstractions for managing subscriber services across the Cisco Unified Communications infrastructure.

Cisco Unified Provisioning Manager includes a powerful template capability that permits reuse of defined configurations for new site or location deployments, and batch provisioning that permits the rollout of large numbers of subscribers at once.

Cisco Unified Service Statistics Manager

Cisco Unified Service Statistics Manager provides advanced statistics analysis and reporting capabilities for Cisco Unified Communications deployments. It is a Web-based software system that features a variety of advanced reports for executive, operations, and capacity planning functions. It supplies standard and customizable reports that give visibility into important metrics such as call volume, service availability, call quality, resource utilization, and capacity throughout the Cisco Unified Communications system. Cisco USSM enables users to view information based on network, service, business, and user criteria and to define service-level agreement (SLA) parameters. You can then measure and verify the SLA based on collected statistics. Finally, it provides customizable report templates and automatic report invocation and scheduling.

Cisco netManager - Unified Communications

Cisco netManager - Unified Communications provides simple, ready-to-use monitoring and diagnostics for small and medium sized Cisco Unified Communications System deployments (up to 1000 users). A single Windows-based server or workstation running Cisco netManager Unified Communications 1.0 software can monitor an entire communications system, including remote sites and up to two Cisco Unified Communications Manager clusters.
